TUPAC ON THE MARRIAGE TO KEISHA MORRIS: “I’m a romantic and I thought, at the time, I wanted to be married. I got married to someone who I cared about. It was a girlfriend. I never had a girlfriend, so it was my only real girlfriend. So we just got married and it didn’t work. Not because of her or me or jail. It wasn’t the right thing to do at the time. We rushed into it. When I married her, I married her for the wrong reasons. I cared about her, but I married her because I was in jail, I was alone. I didn’t want to be alone and I was like, “Well, she’s there. I care about her, she cares about me, let me show some commitment.” Watching Oprah, that’s what happened. Oprah and all these shows, all these women talking about commitment, and I was like, “Oh, okay, well, imagine if a guy’s in jail and proposes.”

TUPAC CHOOSED YOU TO BE HIS WIFE?

Yes, whether people accept it or not. I want the recognition that I deserve. I want to thank Suge Knight for remembering who I am.

YOU HAVE BEEN MARRIED TO A PART OF HISTORY. HOW DID YOU & TUPAC FIRST ENCOUNTER?

We met in June 1994. We were all invited to a party that Puffy had organized at a place called the Capitol. He came, I saw him and I spoke to him for a brief moment and then we made our way. I saw him again a month later at the Tunnel, another Manhattan club. He came to me and told me how much he had thought of me since. I was really surprised. He remembered the first time we had met, of everything. He even remembered the clothes I was wearing. Then he asked if he could take me outside. At the start, I was afraid because I did not know who he was. I wanted to know "why me?" Instead of anyone else. He said that he had never met a woman who had treated her as I had done, which was not something striking in itself. I did not calculate too much, and in fact he was attracted to that side.

WHAT HAPPENED ON YOUR FIRST DATE?

Above all, I was nervous. He wanted me to come to his hotel, and I reacted like "oh no!" Me, in broad daylight with plenty of people around. I was really hesitant, but I left anyway. We went to the Chelsea Movie Theater to see "Forrest Gump", and then we dined around the corner in an Italian restaurant. He wanted to see "Forrest Gump" because he had read the script for Bubba's character. I was completely disoriented, I could not believe who I was going out with.

WHICH ALBUM WAS HE WORKING ON AT THE TIME?

He was in the studio at the time to finish "Me Against The World".

WERE YOU IN STUDIO WITH HIM?

Yes. He recorded both in Los Angeles and New York. I used to go with him to the Studio.

DID HE SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT THE SHOOTING?

Well, he phoned me to tell me that he had just been shot and told to call his mother. He spoke normally, so at first I kept doing what I was doing, but I gave the necessary phone calls to his family.

DID YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS MOTHER?

Yeah, we had a relationship. At first she was pleased that Tupac was with a woman like me, but when it became serious between us, my relationship with hIs mother became scarce.

REASONS?

It was a choice she made. I had no problem with it. My relationship was with his son.

DO YOU THINK SHE FELT YOU MARRIED HER SON FOR HIS MONEY?

I do not know.

DID TUPAC THINK ABOUT IT?

He did not see it like that. We never made a marriage contract, he knew it was just love between us.

WERE YOU MOVED TO BE MARRIED TO TUPAC?

There were many ups and downs. There were unusual situations. We never had a normal day, every day was something with him. His trial days, his time in jail, and when he was with Death Row. Pac had a complex personality. I never knew what to expect with him.

AND WHAT ABOUT SEX?

I can not believe you asked me that! Listen to his music. It was not a problem. Our problem was communication. He was obstinate and wanted to control everything.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT SUGE HAD LOVE FOR HIM?

Suge had an affection for him, and Pac loved Suge and the West. He only hated the East.

BUT YOU ARE FROM THE EAST COAST.

I was an exception, too many people were caught in this whole situation.

PLEASE DESCRIBE A MOMENT WITH TUPAC.

I went to see Tupac in Atlanta and the hotel room caught fire, he was furious with me because I had tried to save myself. He said he could not trust me because I should have stayed with him to fight the fire.

WHEN ARE YOU MARRIED?

On 4 April 1995, and divorced in 1996.

SO, YOU MARRIED TUPAC WHILE HE WAS IN PRISON?

Yes. I went inside the prison. I had to make sure he was fine. It was an experience I would not do again. The prison was 105 km from southern Canada, in Dannemora. An atmosphere of prejudice and coldness.

HOW WAS THE VISIT?

It was horrible. It was all a process and a mess. I took a bus from the city that took about six hours. Then, when you arrived, you had to wait in a room called your number, and come and get you. They had put him in close custody and he did not want to be there. He wanted to be in the general population area. They did not realize how much he was a star. The guards made him spend dirty hours sometimes.

DURING VISITS, COULD YOU TOUCH HIM? No, we did not have any conjugal visits, and he did not want any. WHO ELSE WENT TO VISIT HIM? Some celebrities came, lawyers, managers, Suge, and his family. DID YOU HAVE DISPUTES? No, we had no quarrels, there was just a girl calling our house. The AS-TU GIFLEED FOR THAT? No, there were other ways to deal with it. WHERE DID YOU LIVE ? I lived in Harlem and lived in Atlanta, but stayed at the hotel or home. DID YOU FREQUENTLY SEE SUGE? Yes. HOW WAS HE ? He did not bother me. DID YOU HAVE CHILDREN? No. WHY DID YOU NOT HAVE? It did not happen. WHEN HE DIED DID YOU AND HIS MOTHER CONTACT? No. I stayed away. I had nothing to do with it. BUT YOU WAS HIS WIFE. I was not a widow. I had divorced before it happened, but we could still see each other. I was supposed to leave Vegas but I did not. WHY DID YOU DIVORCE? I could not have endured all this stress any longer. YOU BELIEVE THAT HE IS DEAD? In any case, he has not yet telephoned me ... WHERE IS THE FIRST BULLET TO TUPAC? He was wounded by hand, the most dangerous bullet touched his thigh, because it pierced an artery. His sexual organs were still in place. Peace with myself and know that he rests in peace. On our first date, he told me he was going to die when he was 25, he said it would probably be a murder. I looked at him like he was crazy. DID HE DIVORCE YOU BECAUSE HE ONLY WANTED TO BE MARRIED TO HIS MUSIC? He did not divorce me. I divorced with him. IF HE WAS STILL LIVING DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HE WOULD BE MARRIED TO THE DAUGHTER OF QUINCY JONES? He had all his time to marry her, why did he not? He told me that he was just using her in relation to his father. I do not deny the fact that they had sex, he had with many women. A lot of times. That did not bother me. I got used to it very quickly. I was only 21 when I met Tupac and he wanted to get married right away.

People think he wanted to get married to me because he was in jail and wanted visits, but that was not the case. I met him in June, and in September, he bought me a ring. Tupac married me to be respected when I called Death Row. I held him up when he was in prison. I spoke to his associates and journalists. He did not want people to say, "Oh, it's just his girlfriend." He wanted me to be named. I could have kept the name, some say I should have asked for some of his money, but to do what? THEN, YOU HAVE NOT GOT ANYTHING? Nothing ! And it does not bother me. I did not marry him to be someone or get anything from him. If we had a child, it would have been different, but I could take care of myself, he was not my father. HOW WAS TUPAC AND SUGE'S ALLIANCE? Pac called me and said, "I want you to attend an appointment between me and Suge." So I called Interscope, they gave me the Death Row number. The rest is history.
