Hip Hop was born around the time that Tupac Shakur entered the world and both entities probably didn't have any thought of becoming worldwide powerhouses that would change the world of music. There has been debates with fans for years whether or not he is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All-Time) of hip hop and whether or not he was the actual best lyrical talent.
None of that mattered as it was quite obvious Tupac's music touched many people around the world like very few before and after him in hip hop. You cannot compartmentalize that into any category or any list. He is not only beloved by his fans, but also by his contemporaries which says a lot about how much his lyrics and music meant to the entertainment world.
This aspect sometimes falls on deaf ears of his critics who fail to see exactly why some would call him "The Greatest" with all his faults. I mean even Muhammad Ali had a couple flaws that saw him go down more than once. The greatness is shown in coming back after falling down and that is exactly what Tupac Shakur did when he faced many trials and tribulations in his lifetime that would have hampened the music career of others, but not this icon.
To many hip hop fans of his era, Tupac Shakur represented the ups and downs of life in the 90's for a young black man. Sometimes artists try to reach a larger audience and forget their roots of what got them to the top. Even if Shakur to some may have lost his way at times you could always hear some of that Black Panther in him that his mother Afeni Shakur instilled him even during his east coast vs west coast days which some may feel he turned his back on his earlier work of uniting the black nation.
When he came out of prison in 1996 and was angered at the system and those who turned on him he still dropped music for his people such as "White Man's World". How many stars of today would do a song like that after becoming a mainstream icon in which that type of song could alienate parts of his fanbase?
Not many and this in itself gives real meaning as to why Tupac is missed by many people around the world. The impact he's had on some genuine hip hop legends such as Snoop Dogg and T.I. is undeniable as they showed their adoration for the slain rapper tonight. Seeing him get his just dues tonight at the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame was amazing that his strong work ethic survived the test of time. One of his Outlawz members once stated that Tupac told him he believed he would be a big star who would vanish out of nowhere which ended up being his self fulfilling prophecy which is perhaps why he worked so hard to have so many songs.
We salute the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame for inducting a hip hop icon into its hallowed halls. There is none more deserving than Tupac Amaru Shakur. We hope somewhere and somehow Tupac and Afeni have seen their strong efforts to preserve the legacy was indeed worth it. RIP to Tupac Shakur and Afeni Shakur.
