Solange is Interview Magazine’s latest cover star, and the interview was done by none other than her sister, Beyoncé. She and her sister spoke on “womanism, growing up in a hair salon, and choosing between ‘I could fall in love’ and ‘No Me Queda Mas,’” and she called it “one of her favorites to date.” Check out the cover and another photo from the feature below, and find the full interview here. Solange’s latest album A Seat at the Table was named our #1 album of 2016.
In the beginning of the interview, Beyoncé remembers Solange's tenacity: "I remember thinking, "My little sister is going to be something super special." Solange, in response, remembers being inspired by her older sister as well as her mother's determination. Looking back on these factors in her development, Solange tells Beyoncé , was "why I wanted you to interview me for this piece. Because the album really feels like storytelling for us all and our family and our lineage."
With regards to her album, A Seat at the Table, on which she wrote, arranged, and co-produced every song, Solange says she was inspired to adopt so many roles by Missy Elliot. "I remember seeing her when you guys worked together and being enamored with the idea that I could use myself as more than a voice and the words," She says. "On my previous records, I contributed to production here and there, but I was always really afraid to really get in there."
Solange also told her sister that one of the main misconceptions about being a strong woman is being able to fully celebrate these artistic achievements. "One thing that I constantly have to fight against is not feeling arrogant when I say I wrote every lyric on this album," She tells her sister. "I still have not been able to say that. That's the first time I've actually ever said it, because of the challenges that we go through when we celebrate our work and our achievements."
