Chuck D of the legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy recently told Willie D that a passport could be something to unite the black community. “We all could get a passport just to get one symbolically. Because I think, that’s an easy route to go. Spend the $60 or $70, get a passport then you start to see some of the hypocrisy in the United States of America trying to not let us be free people to the world,” he said. “If we all just got a passport you’d see a whole bunch of crazy sh*t. Amber alerts. It’ll be crazy.” Chuck D believes Black people need to “open themselves up” to the world. “Symbolically, it’s a gesture to make us understand that we’re not limited,” he said. He believes traveling the world will help the Black community get “knowledge of self” which in turn, will help them realize what they need to do to change things. Chuck D also commented on the current state of hip-hop and explained that “every generation got its own thing.” He thinks hip-hop needs more groups like there was in his day because they will help launch the careers of soloists inside these groups, according to Chuck D. He also believes women need to play a bigger role in the genre.
