3 Things to Love About Tory Lanez’s Debut Album “I Told You”
By: Miaira Jennings (@miairajennings)
On August 19th, Tory Lanez finally dropped his debut album I Told You and the title is more than fitting. He told us the music would be fire, and he certainly delivered. The Canadian artist has come a long way since his first mixtape T.L 2 T.O in 2009, consistently putting out quality music while building his loyal fanbase. The hard work is paying off, as I Told You has already broken into the top 5 on the iTunes “Top Albums” list and has received overwhelming positive reviews. Here are the top 3 reasons fans are loving the project.

1. It tells a story.
Tory Lanez has already proven to be a successful storyteller through his vivid music videos and previous mixtapes. Now he has taken it to another level with original skits that follow each track on the album. The skits touch on topics of hustling, love, friendship, loyalty, dream chasing, dedication and reward. This cinematic aspect makes the project more dynamic and gives it a more personal feel.
2. It features a perfect mix of club bangers and slow jams.
Tory Lanez has mastered the art of merging hip hop and R&B, and he didn’t hold back on I Told You. His ability to switch up his sound from song to song while still holding true to his style is worthy of applause. What’s better than an artist who can give us the best of both worlds, right?!
3. It moves attention away from “Drake beef” and onto the music.
Media and fans now have something much more solid to rave about online besides the typical “rapper vs. rapper” narrative. With an album as solid as I Told You, we can now converse about the story told through each skit, debate about which songs are our favorites, and look forward to new music videos. We’ll take the music over the drama any day.
Overall, with I Told You, Tory Lanez has officially proven that he can hang with the best of them (as if he didn’t already), and #SwaveNation has been going hard with the support on social media. Check out some of the best reactions to I Told You, retweeted by Tory Lanez himself:
