The history of hip hop seems to have glorified the word pimp and its attributes going all the way back to Ice T in the 1980's. However, in Toronto there was an emcee who also covered this ground and his name was HDV who is now known as Jacky Jasper.

Artists such as 50 Cent have songs such as "P.I.M.P.", but he wasn't actually being literal. The same can't be said for HDV. The artist according to CBC news, is a Grammy Award winner which is almost unheard of for a Canadian artist especially in urban music. “Proud Ta Be Pimpin’” song from his sophomore Higher Deeper Values release laid out the pimp game blueprint.

He was known in the streets of Toronto as "Hollywood". “I walked out of my cell one day and I saw Michie Mee and [King] Lou [Dream Warriors] on Electric Circus, and I said ‘I could do that,’ I’ve been doing it all my life … we were the original B-boys of Toronto,” says Jasper. “I started writing jail stories from different inmates that was telling me their stories.”

He would later connect with Ivan Berry, who he had known in high school which allowed him to encounter an A & R at ISBA/Sony heard his music and signed him. HDV basically was the real life persona of Terrence Howard's character in Hustle and Flow.
