The world of hip hop today is use to having female rappers spitting lyrics on the mic that rival any male counterpart such as Nicki Minaj or Lil Kim. However, there was a time when the female rap artist was a rare breed that excelled in the industry. One of the originals was Roxanne Shante in America along with MC Lyte and Queen Latifah. In 1988, a program covered the rise of the female hip hop artist which you can see in the video above.
In Canada, during the same time period there was a teenage sensation Michie Mee that caught the attention of American aoriginal rap rtists and true hip hop pioneers such as KRS One. Toronto embraced the Jamiacn Funk Style that she brought to the often male dominated world of hip hop. Also, in the video above you will see archival footage of Michie Mee debuting "Jamaican Funk" on Toronto's Mversion of "Rap City" in the year 1991.
Michie Mee will be celebrating her birthday this weekend and rap pioneer Roxanne Shante will be joining her for the festivities. The event will also have a slew of guests that will participate a the event. Also next month see Michie Mee in Now or Never: Toronto Rappers & Hip Hop Documentary Film at the On Film Festival.
