The mecca of hip hop New York City has been the target in recent months as being the dinousaur of the rap game where it was once a giant, but now has become extinct on its own radio stations with hit songs. In the 90's, there was a similar issue with New York having its authority and crown challenged as the the big dog of hip hop.
The West Coast became the kings of radio and Snoop Dogg led the charge with his Dogg Pound crew. New York New York has been a music video that has become iconic in the East Coast/West Coast War of the 90's and a pivotal moment when Deathrow put a stamp on the birth city of hip hop.
In recent times Kendrick Lamar from the west coast proclaimed himself the King of New York ironically paying homage to a Kurupt line from a song years ago. Then Trinidad James created controversy saying that Down South ran New York IN New York which is unheard of for any rapper to do in anyone's city.
Well, Kurupt has finally come out and stated that the legendary music video was not originally intended as a diss, but as a tribute using the sample of the classic New York New York song from pioneering New York rap group Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. Kurupt explains in a new interview with XXL MAG:
“It wasn’t even going after New York,” Kurupt says during an interview with xxlmag.com. “It wasn’t a diss record. It really wasn’t. ‘New York, New York’ was a record that we made in dedication to New York. We really felt that New York created Hip Hop. New York created battle rap and the whole ball of wax so what I did was a battle rap on this beat DJ Pooh did.”
“We wanted Nas and everybody from New York to be in the video,” Kurupt says. “It was a dedication to New York, but then we got shot at it while we were shooting it. New York felt we were disrespecting them. [Laughs] The New Yorkers wasn’t going for it. They was like, ‘Oh, no. You ain’t gonna shoot this shit out here dissing us.’ They shot at us the next day, so I mean after they shot at us, we went back home and Snoop was like, ‘Man, fuck that.’ Then we shot the other part of the video where we started kicking everything the fuck over. That’s why we started kicking things over because we got shot at it.”
