Only 4 New Rappers Have Gone Platinum Since 2006!

The hip hop industry re-invented the music industry with blockbuster numbers when guys like 50 Cent and Nelly tore up the charts with diamond status numbers in the early part of this millennium. It actually became part of their raps about selling so much records when in the 80's and early 90's rappers like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer got ridiculed for being "sell-outs".

Well, right now it seems since 2005 when artists Young Jeezy and The Game became million selling artists for the first time the cracks in hip hop's dominance started to show. Rap's biggest stars such as Rick Ross have never got to the one million mark for any of his albums. It is clear that things have gone back to the days of gold being a benchmark for greatness when groups like A Tribe Called Quest did it. The days of Tupac smashing records(for street records) and bragging about going quadruple platinum are over.

There have been only FOUR rappers who have gone platinum since 2006:

-Toronto's own Drake

-The "Self Proclaimed King of New York" Kendrick Lamar

-Macklemore

-"The Black Barbie" Nicki Minaj

The usual rap giants such as Jay Z, Kanye West, 50 Cent, and T.I. have gone platinum, but they are products of the era when going platinum was going out of style. The internet and piracy was going on back when these artists were getting huge numbers too at the beginning of the millennium, so it's safe to say that era has come to a close for the new age artists.
